Top BPA-Free Bottles for Kids

By

One great way to reduce your carbon footprint is to limit your use of disposables as much as possible. When it comes to hydration, that means, for example, opting for a reusable water bottle rather than relying on bottled water.

For kids, many parents also try to avoid products with bisphenol-A (BPA) because of concerns about its potential to mimic estrogen, lead to reproductive problems, increase the risk of cancer and interfere with brain development and fat metabolism. Fortunately, if you're trying to limit your children's exposure to BPA, there are many options on the market today that are BPA-free. Here are some options to consider:

1. Crocodile Creek stainless steel drinking bottles

These 13.5-ounce drinking bottles are made of food-grade stainless steel, making them a great alternative to plastic or epoxy-lined metal containers. They are 100% recyclable and free of lead, phthalates and BPA.

Crocodile Creek recommends hand-washing these bottles, which are designed for children ages 3 and up. They come in a variety of bright, kid-friendly designs that match Crocodile Creek's line of lunch boxes and backpacks.

2. Thermos Foogo vacuum-insulated bottle

This 10-ounce drinking bottle from Thermos features double-wall vacuum insulation that keeps beverages cold for up to 10 hours and prevents the exterior from developing condensation. Both the interior and exterior are made of stainless steel.

These bottles are designed for children ages 18 months and up and the parts are interchangeable with other Foogo Phases cups. This bottle is dishwasher safe and comes in a variety of colors.

Thermos also makes 12-ounce FUNtainer bottles for older kids that come in a variety of fun prints.

3. Lifefactory glass bottles

These 9-ounce glass bottles come with a silicone sleeve that prevents them from breaking and provides a strong grip for small hands. They are free of BPA, phthalates, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), latex and polycarbonate.

Lifefactory notes that using glass ensures that there is no metallic or plastic aftertaste to your beverage. The entire bottle, including the sleeve, can be put into the dishwasher. The glass for these bottles is made in France, while the silicone sleeves are made in the United States and bottle caps are made in Poland and the United States.

These bottles are available with nipples for use as baby bottles and can be later be converted to beverage containers for toddlers and children by changing to a sippy or flat cap. The sleeves and bottle tops come in a variety of colors and you can buy extra tops to customize the look of the bottles.

4. Klean Kanteen stainless steel bottles

These 12-ounce bottles are made of food-grade stainless steel that includes recycled content and are free of BPA and phthalates. Klean Kanteen says they don't retain or impart flavors to the beverages they hold. Plus, these bottles fit in most bottle or cup holders and they can be used with a sippy, sport or loop cap.

Made in China, these bottles come in a variety of colors and can be used by children as young as 12 months old, if you opt for a leak-proof sippy top. The sport cap is not leak-proof, so Klean Kanteen recommends its use for kids ages 18 months and up.

The stainless steel bottles are dishwasher safe, but Klean Kanteen recommends hand-washing the colored bottles. Also, the paint used on the colored bottles is water-based, non-toxic and lead-free, but Klean Kanteen recommends the stainless steel bottles for children who like to chew on things.

5. Sigg aluminum bottles

Sigg's kids' bottles come in two sizes: 0.3 liters and 0.4 liters (roughly 10.1 ounces and 13.5 ounces). They come in a wide variety of appealing kid-oriented prints and the caps are also leakproof.

Made in Switzerland, each bottle is made from a single piece of aluminum and lined with a liquid-based liner to ensure there is no leaching of chemicals, metal migration or interference with the beverage's taste. The bottles are also free of BPA and phthalates.

The company releases new designs every year and you can customize each bottle by buying different accessories such as colorful caps or bottle sleeves to protect the bottle from dents. Sigg recommends hand-washing its bottles.

6. Camelbak Eddy plastic bottles

The bottles include Camelbak's patented Big Bite valve and stem made from a single piece of medical-grade silicone, which the company says makes the bottle easy for parents to clean and prevents children from accidentally pulling off the bite valve accidentally.

These bottles are designed for children ages 3 and up. The bottles are made in China and include a lifetime warranty.
